Plain English summary: We collect only what we need to run FreeTree. We do not sell your data. We do not share it with third parties for marketing. You can delete your account and all your data at any time.

1. Who we are

FreeTree is a free link-in-bio service operated at freetree.co.uk. References to "FreeTree", "we", "us" or "our" in this policy refer to the operators of freetree.co.uk. For data protection enquiries, contact us at hello@freetree.co.uk.

2. What data we collect

We collect the following personal data when you use FreeTree:

  • Account information: your display name, account name (URL slug) and email address, provided when you sign up.
  • Content you create: links, titles, images and social media URLs you add to your FreeTree page.
  • Profile customisation: colour choices, fonts, header and background images you upload.
  • Usage data: click counts on your links, recorded per day, to provide you with basic analytics.
  • Technical data: browser user agent strings recorded when links are clicked, used solely for analytics. We do not record IP addresses.

We do not collect payment information. FreeTree is free and we do not process any financial transactions.

3. How we use your data

We use the data we collect solely to provide and operate the FreeTree service. Specifically:

  • To create and manage your account
  • To display your public FreeTree page to visitors
  • To send you a one-time account confirmation email
  • To provide you with click analytics on your links
  • To allow you to log in securely

We do not use your data for advertising, profiling, or any purpose beyond operating the service.

4. Legal basis for processing (GDPR)

For users in the United Kingdom and European Economic Area, our legal bases for processing your personal data are:

  • Contract: processing is necessary to provide the FreeTree service you have signed up for.
  • Legitimate interests: basic security logging and service improvement, where this does not override your rights.
  • Consent: where we send you communications beyond the initial account confirmation email.

5. Data sharing

We do not sell, rent, or share your personal data with any third parties for commercial purposes. We do not use third-party advertising networks. Your data is stored on servers operated by our hosting provider. Our hosting provider processes data only on our instruction and is contractually bound to keep it confidential.

We may disclose data if required to do so by law or by a lawful order from a competent authority.

6. Cookies

FreeTree uses only essential session cookies to keep you logged in while you use the service. We do not use tracking cookies, advertising cookies or any third-party cookie services. No cookie consent banner is required because we use only strictly necessary cookies.

7. Data retention

We retain your personal data for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account, all personal data associated with it — including your display name, email address, links, images and analytics — is permanently deleted immediately and cannot be recovered. We do not retain backups of deleted accounts.

8. Your rights (GDPR / UK GDPR)

If you are based in the UK or EEA, you have the following rights regarding your personal data:

  • Right of access: you may request a copy of the personal data we hold about you.
  • Right to rectification: you may correct inaccurate data via your account settings.
  • Right to erasure: you may delete your account and all associated data at any time via your account settings. This is immediate and permanent.
  • Right to restriction: you may ask us to restrict processing of your data in certain circumstances.
  • Right to data portability: you may request your data in a structured, machine-readable format.
  • Right to object: you may object to processing based on legitimate interests.

To exercise any of these rights, contact us at hello@freetree.co.uk. We will respond within 30 days.

You also have the right to lodge a complaint with the UK Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) at ico.org.uk.

9. California residents (CCPA)

If you are a California resident, you have additional rights under the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA):

  • Right to know: you have the right to know what personal information we collect, use, disclose and sell. We do not sell personal information.
  • Right to delete: you have the right to request deletion of your personal information. You can do this directly via your account settings.
  • Right to opt out of sale: we do not sell personal information, so no opt-out is required.
  • Right to non-discrimination: we will not discriminate against you for exercising your CCPA rights.

To make a CCPA request, contact us at hello@freetree.co.uk.

10. Data security

We take reasonable technical measures to protect your personal data, including encrypted password storage and HTTPS for all data in transit. However, no internet service can guarantee absolute security. You use FreeTree at your own risk and are responsible for keeping your login credentials secure.

11. Children

FreeTree is not intended for use by anyone under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal data, please contact us at hello@freetree.co.uk and we will delete it promptly.

12. Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will update the "last updated" date at the top of this page when we do. We encourage you to review this policy periodically. Continued use of FreeTree after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
